He has been working in New Zealand Plant and Food Institute for 37 years and is currently Director of the Asian Center for Breeding and biotechnology. In 1981-2004, Ellen was responsible for the breeding of apples and pears, collaborated with the Fruit Tree Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to develop pear and apple breeding, collaborated with the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in the development of red pear breeding, and collaborated with the Spanish Institute of IRTA in the breeding of pears and apples. In the 2004-2011, Ellen was responsible for cooperation with Europe. In 2004, Ellen was awarded the "Choi Yun Award" by the Yunnan provincial government for his contribution to Yunnan horticulture. 2011-2012, as a research investment manager.Since January 2013, he has been responsible for projects and cooperation in Asia, involving genetics, germplasm resources, variety identification, disease resistance breeding, DNA mapping and fingerprints.
